The News-Leader 5K (3.1 miles) is great for both runners and walkers who want to have some fun while achieving their fitness goals. This is a great race to do with a family member or a friend!

The 5K is mostly flat. It shares the routes of the Bass Pro Conservation Marathon and the Cohick Half Marathon. Participants in the News-Leader 5K will complete their races before most of the half and full runners enter this part of the course. The race ends in the Cherokee Street parking lot.

*No online registrations will be accepted after October 30. Race day registration is allowed. Registration refunds will not be provided to runners/walkers not able to complete this event. 

Awards

Each participant will receive a long-sleeve tech tee. Those who register early will have the greatest success in getting the size they request. Every attempt will be made to accommodate your request, but sizes cannot be guaranteed. NO EXCHANGES of shirts will be allowed. Late registrants are not guaranteed a shirt.

Cash prizes are all given to the top three male/female finishers as well as the top masters male and female finishers. The prizes are as follows:

First Place $300
Second Place $150
Third Place $75
First Masters $75

*Winners will not be allowed to exchange awards.

Please note that if you are a high school or college student and play sports, you will not be eligible to win the cash prizes. 

Additionally, age group winners will receive plaques. Runners are not able to win more than one award. If you win an overall award, you will not win an age group award.

Packet Pick Up Information and Marathon Weekend Expo

Packet Pickup and late registration will take place:

  • Friday, November 1 from 10 AM to 7 PM
  • Saturday, November 1 from 10 AM to 7 PM
  • Sunday, November 2 from 6 AM to 7:00 AM

All News-Leader 5K participants must pick up their packets before 7:00 AM on race day. Packet pick up will take place in the White River Conference Center, Bass Pro Shops.  If you are new to the area, this is the building on Sunshine street directly behind Bass Pro Shops.  This area will also house our Marathon Weekend Expo!  There will be over 40 vendors with us for the weekend so plan to take a few minutes to walk through and get some good information.  Native Eyewear, New Balance, Sof Sole Fit, Bondi Band, Hy-Vee, and more will be in attendance.  For a full list of vendors, check out our Expo page.

Aid Stations

There will be one aid station at approximately 2.5K. Water, powerade and other amenities will be available.

Training

The training for the 5K run/walk will begin in this summer. The official start date had not yet been set.
