Keep training fresh
Keep It Fresh: How to Stay Motivated in Your Running Routine (Year-Round)
Whether you're just starting out or years into your training, at some point in every runner’s journey, the routine can start to feel repetitive. Maybe you've hit a plateau, maybe motivation is fading, or maybe you're simply craving something new.
No matter where you are in your running journey, keeping things fresh is key to maintaining your passion for movement. Whether you're training for a 5K, half marathon, full marathon, or simply running for your health and well-being, it’s normal to go through phases of burnout or boredom. The good news? With a few simple shifts, you can bring new life to your routine and reconnect with your goals
Here are some tips to keep your running routine fresh and enjoyable all year long:
Vary your routes
Running the same route every day can become monotonous. Explore new neighborhoods, parks, or trails. Try different terrains like trails, hills, or roads—or simply run your usual loop in reverse. I like to stick to the same routes for each day of the week, but on Saturdays, I rotate between a few different long run routes to keep things interesting.
Incorporate different types of runs
Shake up your routine with a mix of tempo runs, interval training, long runs, and recovery days. This variety not only challenges your body in different ways, but also helps prevent burnout and overuse injuries.
Set new goals
Staying motivated is easier when you're working toward something. Set a goal that excites you, whether it's a faster 5K, a distance PR, or something as simple as running a certain number of miles per week or month. Personally, my current goal is to move at least 3.1 miles each day, whether that’s running or walking, outdoors or on the treadmill.
Share your goals with others
The running community everywhere but particularly in Springfield, is one of the most supportive groups you’ll find. Share your wins, your struggles, and your progress. Whether it's through a local group or social media, others will cheer you on and keep you accountable.
Run with others
Running with friends or a local group can bring new energy to your workouts and keep you consistent. There are plenty of running groups throughout the Ozarks that meet on different days and in various towns. If you haven’t joined one yet, I highly recommend it—it can transform your experience
Listen to music or podcasts
Upbeat playlists or inspiring podcasts can be a game-changer on longer runs. They help pass the time, boost your mood, and even make tough miles fly by. (Safety first so make sure you are alert and aware of your surroundings.) And if you’re running with a friend, conversation does the trick too!
Take rest days
Don’t underestimate the power of recovery. Rest is essential for your body to rebuild and come back stronger. Pay attention to your energy levels, aches, and overall wellness. Walking, easy-paced runs, or even complete rest days can make a big difference.
Reward yourself
When you hit a goal or finish a tough run, treat yourself—whether it’s a post-run smoothie, a nap, a massage, or a new pair of running shoes. Celebrating your progress reinforces consistency and keeps you looking forward to what’s next. Whenever you find yourself in a rut, it’s always a great time to shake things up. Try something new, set a fresh goal, and remember why you started. Keep showing up, keep moving forward, and most importantly—KEEP HAVING FUN.
